Footage of South African Air Force veterans preparing to aid Korean war

It’s December 1950. The give-and-take struggle for Korea must accommodate winter weather and airfields yet to be upgraded.

Volunteers from South Africa’s air force have come to Korea to help the United Nations.

These scenes depict men and Mustangs of 2 Squadron, the Flying Cheetah Squadron, of South Africa.

The South Africans are attached to the U.S. Air Force’s 18th Fighter Bomber Wing in Korea, at Suwon when this was filmed. In what looks to be a portmanteau combination of the words African and American, the title slates for this film say it depicts the South African Air Force.

Performing dangerous ground-attack sorties, it is said the South Africans lost 74 F-51 Mustangs during the Korean War.
